Frontotemporal Disorders 2 CE

 Frontotemporal disorders are forms of dementia caused by damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes.  Many possible symptoms can result, including unusual behaviors, emotional problems, trouble communicating, difficulty with work, or difficulty with walking.  In Frontotemporal Disorders, Participants will learn about the basics of frontotemporal disorders.  Next, Participants will explore the three types of frontotemporal disorders: progressive behavior/personality decline; progressive language decline; and progressive motor decline.  Additionally, Participants will consider current information known about the biological and genetic causes of these disorders.  Also, Participants will identify the ways in which these disorders are currently being diagnosed.  Next, Participants will learn about common behavioral, language, emotional and movement symptoms.  Additionally, Participants will explore how various symptoms are managed.  Finally, Participants will consider the various challenges facing caregivers, such as: changing family relationships; loss of work; poor health; decisions about long-term care; and end-of-life concerns.

This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child/adult welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with Frontotemporal Disorders.

Course Objectives: 

• To be familiar with the basic principles of frontotemporal disorders
• To comprehend the disorders that fall under the three main groups
• To be aware of current beliefs concerning the biological and genetic causes
• To consider the various ways in which these disorders are diagnosed
• To identify common behavioral, language, emotional and movement symptoms
• To explore the ways in which symptoms are managed
• To understand the many issues experienced by caregivers of people diagnosed with frontotemporal disorders
