Cultural Competence

Cultural Competence 8 CE and 8 NBCC approved clock hours

 

In Improving Cultural Competence, Participants will begin with an introduction to cultural competence.  Next, Participants will consider counselor’s core cultural competencies and will be presented with clinical activities, including clinical supervision tools.  Additionally, Participants will learn the nine steps of culturally responsive evaluation and treatment planning.  Also, Participants will consider 20 organizational tasks that support counselors’ development of cultural competence and improve organizational development of culturally responsive treatment services.  Next, Participants will become familiar with specific patterns of substance use and substance disorders, help-seeking patterns, beliefs about and traditions involving substance use, beliefs and attitudes about treatment, assessment and treatment considerations and theoretical approaches and treatment interventions with respect to each major racial and ethnic group.  Additionally, Participants will learn about drug cultures and the culture of recovery.  Finally, Participants will conclude by reviewing instruments, tools and other cultural resources located in the Appendix.

This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with cultural competence

Course Objectives: 

  • To be familiar with basic objectives and information concerning cultural competence
  • To learn about core competencies for counselors and other clinical staff
  • To identify the 9 steps of culturally responsive evaluation and treatment planning
  • To explore organizational cultural competence
  • To be aware of the principles and considerations for behavioral health treatment for all major racial and ethnic groups
  • To consider the concepts of drug culture and the culture of recovery
  • To be aware of how marijuana use affects the brain and body
  • To explore various cultural materials, instruments, tools and other resources
