Depression in Mothers

Depression in Mothers 3 CE and 3 NBCC approved clock hours

In Depression in Mothers: Participants will gain general knowledge about depression.   Next, Participants will consider various tips and tools for working with mothers who may be depressed.  Additionally, Participants will learn about popular programs for mothers with young children. Also, Participants will review several handouts for mothers with depression.  Finally, Participants will become familiar with how to access other depression resources.

This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with helpful information about depression in mothers.

Course Objectives:

  • To be aware of the significant public health problem that depression in mothers poses
  • To understand the signs and commonality of depression
  • To comprehend the importance of helping a mother realize that she is depressed
  • To be familiar with the impact a mother’s depression has on her children
  • To utilize tips and tools for working with mothers who may be depressed
  • To consider popular programs for mothers with young children, such as: Early Head Start and Head Start; Home Visiting; and Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
  • To explore handouts that address the benefits of engaging in pleasant activities; how to make good choices; how to choose amongst the different kinds of pleasant activities; and other ideas for improving mood and managing stress
  • To aware of how to access other depression resources, such as: fact sheets and brochures; free screening tools; and other useful materials.
