Addictions and Mental Health Issues in the LGBT Population

3 CE and 3 NBCC approved clock hours

Participants will begin with an overview of LGBT mental health and addiction problems. Next, Participants will consider major themes of LGBT wellness and recovery factors for LGBT.  Additionally, Participants will learn about the series of recommendations proposed to advance recovery opportunities for LGBT people.  Also, Participants will become familiar with the LGBT Mental Health Consumer Movement.  Finally, Participants will conclude by reviewing: a glossary of important terminology; a summary of efforts and future recommendations made by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to improve the lives of LGBT people; a table of SAMHSA’s strategic initiatives and action steps for addressing the needs of LGBT populations; and a list of resources of references located in the Appendix.

This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with LGBT addictions and mental health issues.

Course Objectives:

  • To be familiar with basic information concerning LGBT mental health and addiction problems
  • To explore themes, findings and recommendations from a formal dialogue that focused on addiction and mental health issues faced by LGBT individuals
  • To identify milestones in the LGBT Mental Health Consumer Movement
  • To consider actions taken by the government to improve LGBT health and well-being
  • To be familiar with LGBT action steps involved with SAMHSA’s strategic initiatives
  • To be aware of LGBT terminology, resources and references
