In Substance Abuse Treatment: Addressing the Specific Needs of Women, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Participants will begin with the perspective that substance abuse treatment for women should consider the contexts of women’s lives.  Next, Participants will consider factors associated with initiation of use and the prevalence of substance use disorders.  Additionally, Participants will learn how women differ from men with respect to the physiological effects of alcohol, drugs and tobacco.  Also, Participants will recognize that accurate diagnosis and successful treatment requires an understanding of the extent and nature of a woman’s substance use disorder and its interaction with other areas of her life.  Next, Participants will become familiar with the challenges in engaging in treatment services unique to women and the considerations involved with treatment placement and planning.  Additionally, Participants will learn about substance abuse differences among specific population groups and settings.  Also, Participants will consider treatment retention factors and protocols.  Finally, Participants will conclude by reviewing recovery management protocols.

 This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with the specific needs of women regarding substance abuse treatment.

 Course Objectives: 

  • To be familiar with basic objectives and principles surrounding the substance abuse treatment needs of women
  • To learn about the patterns of use among women
  • To identify the physiological effects of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco on women
  • To explore substance abuse screening and assessment of women
  • To be aware of treatment engagement, placement, and planning strategies and considerations unique to women
  • To consider substance abuse among specific women population groups and settings
  • To be aware of substance abuse treatment retention and issues facing women
  • To explore recovery management and administrative considerations
