Involuntary Commitment 3 CE

Involuntary Commitment 3 CE  3 CE and 3 NBCC approved clock hours

Course Description:

This course will either introduce mental health professionals to nuanced accounts on mental-illness and involuntary commitment or refine their understanding of the psychiatric and legal institution of involuntary commitment. Mental illness and involuntary civil detention are not only within the realm of psychiatrists, mental health workers, lawyers and judges, this course will be interdisciplinary in the sense that perspectives from sociologists, psychologist, philosophers, and scientists will constitute a good part of this course. There is a school of thought called holism; its main tenet is that all intellectual and professional endeavors are intimately connected. Meta-analyses of involuntary commitment from people outside the mental health and legal industry will constitute considerable segment of this course.

Objectives include:

  • Participants will learn the historical background of involuntary commitment.
  • Participants will learn the extent of the relationship between the legal system and medical system as the foundation for involuntary commitment as an institution.
  • Participants will learn the application of neuroscience to the concept of the mind, mental illness and, of course, involuntary commitment.
  • Participants will learn meta-analyses of involuntary commitment: how theories of the mind and brain comport with the causal relationship between mental states and physical behaviors and the causal relationship between minds, brains, mental-illness and behaviors.
  • Participants will also learn the analytical, moral, political and sociological aspects of involuntary commitment.
