Course Description                                                                                                                                                           

Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. This Course focuses mainly on addiction as it relates to the use and misuse of illegal substances. The Participant will understand how and why people become addicted to illegal substances from biological and environmental perspectives. Additionally, Participants will learn how addiction to illegal substances affects those addicted, those around the addicted, and society as a whole. The Course outlines available treatment options and the demographics that may benefit from them.

 Course Objectives:

  • To recognize the role played by scientific research in understanding addiction
  • To identify what groups of people are susceptible to or affected by addiction
  • To comprehend the factors that put people at risk of becoming addicted
  • To understand how the brain is affected by addiction

  • To be familiar with the treatment techniques and how they are effective
  • To realize the importance of studying drug abuse and addiction
